I know I'm breaking some blog-iquette by posting a comment on a posting that has nothing to do with what I'm asking . . .
with that said--I was googling "nyc teaching fellowship blogs" and found your site. I've gone through and read here and there, but I'm intrigued. I would love to ask you a few (dozen) questions. background--I grew up in NYC (okay, in Staten Island, but that's technically part of NYC!) and moved to Grand Rapids, MI to go to college--hated it--moved back and lived in manhattan 3 years, got spit up and spewed out and found myself back in Grand Rapids. I don't hate it as much this time around, but I do miss the city. I majored in psychology and thought I was going to go to grad school, but it didn't work out. I originally had wanted to be a special ed teacher . . . but at this point in my life, I just haven't been able to see any way to change careers without going back to school and therefore more in debt--and the problem with grad school was that I didn't want to work full-time (as I had in my undergrad) oh boy. I'm rambling. and I don't see a question here.

I am thinking about applying for 2008. not sure I'll get in (they say it's "competitive"--I suspect that, with math, you've had a little bit easier time of it, but I could be wrong). How was the process? how did you find out about it? how hard was the LAST? where did you live? (a big part of moving to GR was the difference in cost of living). if you went to city college, did you have to pay part of your tuition? (the teaching fellows website is a bit vague on that) anything else you can tell me?
I know you didn't like the inner city schools--but that is where I (in theory) would LIKE to teach. still, I know that even though I go to a "multicultural" church now, I would still feel kind of out of my element, and maybe it's not what I imagine. the whole thing is hard. I don't miss some of the things you've mentioned (like the cockroaches, or the sleazy men on the subway touching themselves and looking at you--what IS that?!) but I do so miss other things--I went on the fresh direct website and saw that they sell drinkable yogurt! not "smoothies"--REAL drinkable yogurt that's not just Danimals.
    oops. rambling again, sorry.
I guess I would just love to hear any pro's and con's of your experience--I got a bit of it from my scanning of your blog--but I would love to hear more. . . i'll bet that they'll block this, but my e-mail is laterainATsbcglobalDOTnet, and if you have time, I would LOVE to hear from you.
thanks for dealing with my ramblings!
